Pippin

Pippin was an irresistible subject, with his tufty texture and that wonderfully grumpy expression. I wanted the watercolour to feel as spontaneous as he was, so I let the paint run and splatter rather than trying to contain it. The white of the paper does a lot of the work in the belly and muzzle, and I built the russet tones gradually, wet into wet, until I felt his weight and warmth come through.
